Remote Desktop with NoMachine NX
Have you ever been at home, working on your Windows PC and wished that
you could access your Linux workstation without the need for
X-Windows?
Well, you can! Here's a screenshot, showing how you can connect to your Linux
workstation from within Windows in order to access your files and run Linux
applications such as UCSF Chimera:

Linux Workstation Set Up
If this sounds like something you'd like, please
email us
and we'll get your Linux workstation set up.
You don't have to do anything on the Linux side of things.
Once we've installed and configured the software on your
workstation, follow the rest of this document for configuring
and using NX on your home PC.
Windows PC NX Client Set Up
- Download the /etc/nx_client.pub file from the host you are connecting to by using SFTP/SCP
- Download and install the NX Client for Windows from NoMachine's download page
- Run the "NX Connection Wizard" located at Start->Programs->NX Client for Windows->NX Connection Wizard

- For the "Session" name, use the name of the host you are going to connect to
- For the "Host" name, use the full name of that host, including the .bio.purdue.edu
- For the "Port" use 2200, NOT 22.
- Select the appropriate connection type, or leave it at ADSL if unsure
- Click the "Next" button

- Leave the "Unix" and "KDE" selections
- You may want to adjust the size of the remote desktop to something
smaller, otherwise the window may be too large. 1024x768 or 800x600
would be good candidates for non-obtrusive window sizes.
- Check the "Enable SSL encryption of all traffic" option
- Click "Next"

- Make sure that "Show the Advanced Configuration dialog" is checked, and then click "Finish"

- Click the "Key" button in the resulting dialog and import the key you downloaded in the first step and click "Save"
- Click "Save" and then "Ok"

- Enter your password and click the "Login" button.
